Our legacy began in 1977, when a small group of Saanich Peninsula neighbours came together with a simple but powerful idea: build a locally owned Co-op grounded in community, connection and shared values. They went door to door inviting people to join something that belonged to all of us. That spirit took form when the first Peninsula Co-op Food Centre opened on Keating Cross Road in May 1977 - and it is the same spirit that still guides us today.
As our community grew, so did we. In the early ’80s, Peninsula Co-op ventured into the petroleum business, eventually building a network of 17 gas centres stretching from Victoria to Campbell River, along with a long-standing partnership with Save-On Gas.
Most recently we launched "The Liquor Co. 1977" brand, through 10 liquor retail store acquisitions across Greater Victoria and Nanaimo. The spirit of Peninsula Co-op’s inaugural year is the inspiration in our liquor stores, but it’s not just about savouring the past. It’s about inviting people to craft memorable moments, one sip at a time, while pouring love back into our community.
And while we have grown, one thing has not changed - we remain 100% locally owned and operated, with more than 125,000 active member-owners shaping who we are. For us, it is not just about great products or memorable sips; it is about creating connection, giving back, and celebrating the communities we call home. As a triple-bottom-line co-operative, we share our success with the people who make it possible - returning profits to member-owners, investing meaningfully in our communities, and sharing earnings with our staff. That difference begins - and continues - with membership, because together we create the kind of place where small moments add up to something meaningful, and every day is made better.
