The HarbourCats are Victoria's entry in the West Coast League (WCL), a summer-collegiate, wood bat baseball league that features the top college-age players from across North America and the world. The HarbourCats and WCL teams feature MLB Prospects from many of the top college baseball programs in North America. All WCL teams recruit players nationwide and are committed to developing aspiring pros.
Our players are striving to get to that next level and the next stop for them after college will be pro or minor-pro teams. Many of our players have already been drafted, but chose to stay in school and will re-enter the draft when they graduate. As a league, no other college summer league has ever had as many drafted student-athletes and alumni reaching the big leagues so early in its history. A record fifty-five former or current West Coast League players were selected in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. That record was broken as the number rose to 57 in 2013, and is expected to rise in the future. In 2017, there were 271 alumni of the WCL playing professional baseball at all levels, including 32 that were active on the rosters of MLB teams. This included 2013 Victoria HarbourCat Nick Pivetta, who became the first HarbourCat to play in the MLB when he pitched for the Phillies in 2017.
